History of the Golf Club Punta Ala

Golf Club Punta Ala started its activity in spring 1964. Its tracing expands a total lenght of 6.168 metres,  PAR 72, SSS 72; It winds with sweet field undulations among the "Maremmana" undergrowth made up of evergreen and thickset vegetation, maritime pines, cork oaks, ancient holm oaks, rampant oak trees and arbutus bushes. The 18 holes project has been designed by Giulio Cavalsani according to the most up -  to - date principles of the golfistic architecture; The greens too, just about all undulated and of wide dimension, have been located in the most vantage points of the area at disposal. The course sited in a panoramic zone with a beautiful sea - sight, has been classified at the 5^th place in Europe by a team of foreign journalists for the technical and panoramic aspect. From each hole we can see a wonderful landscape like few in Europe: on the front you can see the sea, on the back you can see the lush vegetation of the hillocks under a sky clear all the time. The realization of this wonderful golf course is due to Punta Ala society owner of the ground and to the planner zeal which , with great skill and ample means, have been able to get over the technical difficulties completing the construction works in record time. In fact the course was opened just two years later the beginning of the works and perhaps it is, at least in Europe, just a record. The area held by the 18 holes which takes a surface of about 60 hectares, has been totally deforested leaving here and there some of the most rampant trees as beautiful and natural obstacles that make the game very interesting. The building works started in March 1962 with the chopping of the forest and the excavation of the land where the undulation were too marked: Then followed the filling of large hollows of the ground and finally the flattering of the total worked area. To express exactly which was the dimension of the works it's enough to say that were removed 200.000 cubic metres of building materials, that were carried out drainage works for about 3 kilometres and were digged ditches for about 5 kilometres. Simultaneously to those works, in summer 1962 started also the construction of the irrigation system whose planning was given to a specialized house from Milano that carried out a pluvial - irrigation system totally automatic. Such system, at the time largely tested in the United States, was the first in Europe; It is made up of a steel pipeline network developing about 16.000 metres to which lead 450 special irrigators, each one buried and set out to irrigate the whole course. Since 1992 a new irrigation system totally computerized is operating. About greens and fairways seeding, different qualities of grass were tested with 1 year in advance and the result brought the choice for "Agrostide - seaside" for greens and "zoysya-japonica'' for fairways; The last one has left the place to a new essence of "Bermuda" forming a perfect fairway, delight for all the Golf Club Punta Ala players.
