Puntone, also called Puntone di Scarlino or Portiglione, is a frazione of Scarlino, a municipality in the Province of Grosseto in the Gulf of Follonica.
Its peculiarity consists of a structure of the early 900 used as a hydraulic toll booth. For several years, inside, there has been the Archaeological Museum of Portus Scabris.
Also interesting is the warehouse attached to it, with a structure placed on the river. Despite the small extent of its extent, there are several archaeological finds in the Puntone.
A 3rd-century tomb in .C., a Bronze Age settlement not far from the sea, a Roman villa has been found in this location.
In a hamlet of a few souls, there is also the medieval church of San Severo, as evidence of this place’s liveliness.
In 1962 the Montecatini company built an artificial channel for the use of its chemical activities of the nearby plant. This has damaged the preservation of the Roman villa.
Today Puntone is a renowned seaside resort, with its typical beach attractions and marina.
The port is considered that of Follonica, only 4 km away, because it does not have a landing place in its municipality.
There are the famous and beautiful beaches of Cala di Terra Rossa, Cala Le Donne, Cala Martina, Cala Violina, Cala Civette.
