Tirli

Tirli is a frazione of Castiglione della Pescaia in the Province of Grosseto, Communities. Located on a hill, it is a real gem among the woods of lychees and chestnut trees.

It is a small medieval village with stone houses, surrounded by uncontaminated nature-rich in-game. From these hills, you can see the sea, and this view makes the landscape even more out of time.

Walking on the paths around Tirli, you can reach the Hermitage of Sant’Anna, which still today recalls the devotion of many faithful for the presence of the source dedicated to the holy protector of fertility.

The area is affluent in chestnut trees, and along other paths, you can reach the ruins of the Hermitage of St. William of Malavalle.
Thanks to the care of Augustinian friars, the place was rebuilt in the 18th century.
In Tirli, in the church of St. Andrew the Apostle, the relics of St. William are preserved along with the rib of the dragon killed by the Saint and offer several other attractions.

In the village of Tirli is set the story of Carlo Cassola “Il taglio del bosco”, from 1950. The film of the same name was adapted from this book in 1963.
The protagonist, Gian Maria Volonté, was the only professional actor in the film. All the other actors who appeared were inhabitants of the country.

The presence of wild boar is powerful in these woods. The local cuisine takes advantage of all the opportunities and offers it in different versions: to the hunts, apples, and chestnuts with mushrooms.

But Maremma, and Tirli in particular, also has in its cookbook the handmade Tortelli and obviously seasoned with wild boar sauce.

Another feature of Tirli, and a few other countries in the area, is the game of the Eh! Ball, or Ball 21.
It is a traditional game that is practiced in two teams, with hands protected only by gloves.
